Ordering Guide

How to order — and how to measure

Four things decide a prehung door: width, handing, jamb depth and hinge finish. Get those right and the unit drops straight into the opening.

The order in five steps

This is the same path a quote request follows through our shop.
  1. Decide how much prep you want. Slab, precut or prehung — see the comparison below.
  2. Measure the opening. Measure between the studs, then allow 2" for jamb and shims.
  3. Confirm the handing. Stand where the door swings toward you and note whether it opens to the left or the right.
  4. Pick jamb depth and hinge finish. 4 9/16" standard or 6 9/16" custom; 3" hinges in silver or black.
  5. Send the list. Build a quote list on our product pages, or send us a spec sheet, and we'll confirm and price the order.
Not sure about something? Send a photo of the opening with a tape measure in frame and we'll work it out with you.

Slab, precut or prehung?

We make all three. Prehung is our main line — the higher the prep, the faster the install.

Slab

Just the door. No jamb, no hinges, no machining — nothing routered.

Precut

Door and jamb cut to your opening and machined ready for assembly on site. Available on request — tell us the opening and we'll confirm exactly what prep is included.

Prehung

Door and hinges pre-mounted in the jamb, ready to install. The handle hole is bored. Handles are not included.

A finished prehung unit — door hung in its jamb, hinges fitted, handle bore cut.

Swing, jamb and hardware options apply the same way across the range — the difference is only how far we take the assembly.

Measuring your opening

Measure the rough opening — the gap between the studs — before any trim goes on.
  1. Measure the space between your studs. Take it in at least two places (top and bottom) and use the smallest number.
  2. Subtract 2" — that's the allowance for the jamb and shims.
  3. Find the next closest door width, counting down in 2" steps.
Worked example.
Rough opening measures 31 3/8"
Subtract 2"  →  29 3/8"
Closest door  →  28" wide

Always round down, not up. Shims can take up slack on a slightly narrow unit, but there is no room to give if a door is too wide for the opening.

Our standard width range runs from 18" to 36" in 2" steps at a 80" height. If your opening needs something outside that, ask — we can tell you what's possible.

Finding your handing

Left-hand or right-hand? It's about which way the door swings, not which side the hinges are on.

Stand on the side of the door where it pushes open — the side it swings away from you. Then look at which way it opens: if it swings to your left, it's left hand. If it swings to your right, it's right hand.

Shortcut: if you can send us a photo of the door you're replacing, we'll read the handing from it and confirm before the order is built.
